Stretton Associates specializes in conveying information through graphics, and explaining technical material to a less-than-technical audience. Here are some of the
tips we've learned:
1. Know your audience. You can't appeal successfully to everyone. Each choice of language, tone, level of complexity, level of technical information, color,
images, font and type size will appeal to some audiences and not to others. Design the publication with the audience in mind.
2. Start design work early if you want both words and
graphics to work together to convey your message.
3. Lend readers a hand. Most people have want information FAST! Use executive summaries, pull quotes, and other techniques
to convey the gist of a report in a hurry. In a series of bullets, give each bullet a short title so that readers can scan the information quickly.
4. Go easy on the eyes. Color is
great, but more is not always better! When planning the use of color, consider how your photographs blend with the colors selected.
5. Know the substance!
Fancy graphics are no substitute for knowing the subject matter "inside out."
